Ecuadorian Biodiversity Project
The field procedures consist largely of transect methods. With these techniques, trails are walked, every individual reptile or amphibian is recorded, and various ecological and animal activity data are collected. An impromptu laboratory is set up at each of our study sites which will serve as a base of operations for collecting further data that will aid in the identification of a given animal to species. Our study site for the spring 2010 expeditions is the Rio Bigal Biological Reserve in the upper slopes of the Amazon Rainforest. In our first expedition there this last August, we documented the presence of nearly 60 species of reptile and amphibian, including several candidates for species that are new to science!

Additional Requirements
Terms: May 9-18, 2010; May 21-30, 2010. Must commit to at least 1 full term. Cost is $1200/Term; full payment is due one month prior to departure. The most important qualifications that you can bring to the project are enthusiasm and a good work ethic. Participants 18 years and younger need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. There will also be some challenging living conditions, and participants need to be prepared to be wet and/or muddy for many hours, or even days, in a row. You will have to be prepared to face a diversity of biting insects, and be faced with the possibility of serious illness, although both of these may be minimized by proper precautions. A knowledge of Spanish is helpful, but not at all required.
