Sleeping in airports is a funny and informative webpage with tips on saving money while travelling. As the title suggests, its main focus is on sleeping in airports while travelling, rather than a hotel or hostel.

The site was created by Donna McSherry. In 1994, Donna flew from Canada to Ireland. During her stay in Ireland, she stuck to a tight budget by hitchhiking, bringing along her own food, and of course, sleeping in airports. Upon returning home, Donna started a webpage with moneysaving tips for fellow travellers on a budget.

In its 14 years on the Internet, the webpage has expanded to include over 3800 airports that have been sleep-tested by budget conscious travellers. Finding a specific airport is easy. Simply click on the continent, then the country, then city and finally on the airport. Each airport has been graded, and includes traveller’s stories from their time dozing there. The stories are both helpful and hilarious.

One of my favourite stories occurred at Heathrow airport where an employee, determined to clean the floor, hits one sleeper in the face. You can find it at this link under “Ross” at http://www.sleepinginairports.net/europe/londonheathrow.htm.

The site also features some great tips for first time airport sleepers, such as bringing along an inflatable mattress and a set of earplugs. (http://www.sleepinginairports.net/tips.htm).

So before heading out on your next great adventure, have a quick look at www.sleepinginairports.net. Not only will it provide you with a good laugh, it may also save you money!
