Know your route: If you have at least a vague idea of where you are going, you will feel more in control of the situation and will therefore come across as more confident and confidence is a natural repellent to crime.

Learn the taxi vocab: Learn the appropriate vocabulary for giving directions and for asking how much the ride will cost. This may sound obvious but it will make you a much more assertive and less vulnerable passenger.

Don´t be a target: When you are in the taxi, you may feel safer than you would on public transport but the same rules apply, keep your valuables hidden and don´t make yourself a target a thief could easily open the door while you are waiting at traffic lights and whip away your belongings.

Trust your instinct: This old gem is a cliché for a reason. Again, most taxi drivers are absolutely fine and will deliver you safely to your door, but if you sense any danger whatsoever you should simply get out and walk away at the earliest opportunity.
