Want to try something a little different during your stay in Ecuador? Get your heart rate up with a game of Pelota Nacional. Pelota Nacional is a popular ball game native to Ecuador. Literally translated, the name means National Ball, an appropriate title considering its Ecuadorian origins.
The game originated in Ecuador over 500 years ago. 5 centuries later, the game is still played all across Ecuador and in other South American countries like Brazil.
Originally, Pelota Nacional was played with balls of animal skin and wooden planks. Luckily, the equipment has advanced significantly over the years. The animal hide balls have been replaced with small rubber ones, and while the paddles are still made of wood, they are now carved into a racket shape and coated with rubber. They look similar to ping-pong paddles, only larger and more elongated.
The game is reminiscent of the childhood game monkey in the middle, only with more players, and large rackets. There are three teams. Each team has up to five players. Two of the teams hit a ball back and forth with large wooden paddles. The third team stands in the middle and tries to stop the ball. It is scored similar to tennis.
The field is typically rectangular, with a long line down the middle. While the sport can be seen being played around Ecuador by all ages and skill levels, there is also a competitive league. This sport, like baseball and many other professional sports, also attracts gamblers who place bets on their favorite teams.
While the concept of Pelota Nacional sounds simple, it can be a confusing and somewhat difficult game to catch on to. Tourists who have seen or tried the game usually recommend watching a few rounds before jumping in and trying it out for yourself. And if you dont catch on right away, keep at it! Its a great way to experience an age-old Ecuadorian tradition, while getting a work out and having a lot of fun!
