Description: We offer the opportunity for volunteers to come and live and work with families in various communities in rural Ecuador.
The emphasis for this home stay is the exchange of culture and customs between the volunteer, the family, and also the community members.
We therefore request that volunteers try to have a conversational level of Spanish as communication is an essential part of this experience, and approach the culture with an open mind. Please note we can organise Spanish classes to help increase your spanish language ability.
Volunteers will follow the daily routine of their host family, getting up when they do and passing the day together on the land or in the community. Through conversation and practical experience volunteers will live and learn about the traditions and daily lives of these campesino families.
Requirements: Some Spanish and an open mind to experience the traditional.

Volunteer teaching in rural Ecuador

Description: We work with small rural schools, called Unidocentes or Pluridcoentes meaning there is just 1 or 2 teachers. These schools have between 20 and 55 pupils whom are normally taught in just 1 or 2 classrooms. As the age range is from 4-11 yrs this provides quite a challenge for the teaching staff, managing between 3 and 6 grades simultaneously. Simply the presence of a volunteer will help alleviate the daily pressures. You will take charge of either a class or a group under the teachers guidance.
Requirements: Some basic Spanish language skills, a big bag of enthusiasm and miles of smiles.

Description: We are looking for persons who can teach English in the rural school in the area around Otavalo. You will be teaching children in the age of 9 to 12 years. The level is very basic. There are three positons available:april to June and one from May to June 2008 and from February to June 2008. Then the next placements are from september 2008. There are 8 left.
In exchange you recieve from the community bed and board.
Requirements: Being an open minded person that loves children and has some experience working with children.

Mindo

Mindo photo

Mindo is a great place to visit for many reasons. The nature is the greatest attraction for most tourists. The enormous biodiversity is known all over the world. The area around the town has the highest diversity of birdspecies in the world.

For those looking for a bit more action than birdwatching, some adventure travel activities have been developed by the community. Consider going tubing on the wild river or abseiling down into deep cliffs.

The waterfalls near Mindo are a popular attraction too. Hike through the cloudforest to get there and jump into the waterfalls for some refreshment.

Mindo is one of the first community based tourism projects of Ecuador.The community has received several awards for their great efforts topreserve nature in the area. As part of their work they we able toprotect a large area of highly diverse forest from being cut down byfarmers. Mindo is one of the success stories for community based tourism which has inspired others in the region to follow.
