Mendez
Though it lacks any tourist industry or infrastructure whatsoever (or maybe because of this, depending on your view), the charmingly minuscule and picturesque town of Mendez is a great place to break up the nine-hour journey between Macas and Gualaquiza. Time marches slow in this town, whose richlypainted colonial houses precariously perched on jungle ledges and squeezed into lush valleys make it an ideal place to stretch your legs and wander for a few hours or a few days, whatever your pace may be. Just don't go in expecting to pepper a tourism office with questions or find an adventure travel agency, the sole purpose of visiting Mendez is to mellow out in the languid jungle heat.

Again, tiny Mendez doesn't cater to tourists with fancy restaurants and lavish dinners, but budget travelers will be quite content as the streets surrounding the main square are filled with cheap but clean restaurants and food stands.

Mendez is about three hours ($3)south of Macas and about six hours ($6) north of Gualaquiza, though the latter journey can take up to eight hours because of the winding, unpaved, mountainous road. The jungle town of Limon, equally small though not as picturesque as Mendez, is about two hours ($2) south. All busses passing through town cruise by the main square and stop no more than a block away, so this is as good a place as any to wait.
