Loja may not have the historical alure of Cuenca, but it is an excellent alternative for those who don't like the busy touristy colonial city of Cuenca. Loja is a small city with a pretty, laidback colonial center.

Many travellers miss out by passing by Loja on their way from Cuenca to Vilcabamba. The pretty curches, friendly people andbeautiful surrounding area makes Loja to be a pleasant surprise for those who choose to spend the night.

Spend a morning walking around Loja before jumping on the next bus out of there. For those interested in community based tourism, Saraguro is an excellent daytrip from Loja.

A big plus for budget travellers: Loja is relatively cheap in comparison to Cuenca. You will save about 30% on Loja accommodation.
