Pimampiro is situated in the Chota Valley north of Quito. The warm and dusty Chota Valley is know in Ecuador for its interesting Afro Ecuadorean culture and traditions.
The ancestors of its current habitants were originally brought in to Ecuador in the 17th century to work as slaves on the fields in Ecuador. The Rio Chota Valley is rarely visited by travellers, even though it is one of the culturally most interesting areas of Ecuador.

Pimampiro is a typical town in the Chota Valley, a dusty small town where poverty rules. The habitants of Pimampiro are still some of the kindest people you can meet in Ecuador. The reserved people of Pimampiro open their arms to visitors, for an interesting visit to a different kind of Ecuador.

The trip to Pimampiro alone is spectacular enough to visit the town. The road from Ibarra drops about 1500 meters within thirty minutes and gives you some amazing views of the entire valley. Passing some small towns and many fields filled with crops grown by local farmers makes a trip to Rio Chota Valley an enjoyable experience.
