Otavalo is a hotspot for tourism in Ecuador. It is famous for the enormous handicraft market held every Saturday. You can buy all sorts of colourful clothing, scarfs, jewelery and hammocks for low prices. Make sure to bargain hard for your souvenirs.

The handicraft market can be visited every day of the week, but the one on Saturday is about twice as big. Another fun activity on Saturday is the animal market starting early in the morning. This market is a lot more traditional for Ecuador. The local people will buy and sell all sorts of local farm animals, including chicken, pigs and cows. It is a fun and traditional event to watch.

Besides the market Otavalo is a pretty normal Andean town. There is a pleasant plaza where old men and schoolkids spend their afternoons and quiet streets make for an enjoyable walk.

Nearby villages Peguche and San Pablo make for great hikes through the green surrounding of Otavalo. Consider going to Cayambe for some of the best cheese in the country.
