Jarabe de Palo frontman Pau Done wanted to be consistent publishing his previous album Un Metro Cuadrado 1m2. "People should be able come to us just like they can to a painting by Picasso or a movie by Almodovar, knowing beforehand what to expect," he explained to his fans just a few years ago. But there's a fine line between consistency and redundancy, and much of Un Metro Cuadrado fell disappointingly in the latter camp. And he has accomplished the same with the latest album Adelantando. It's too bad because there is so much to love about Jarabe de Palo's signature sound, an appealing mishmash of Caribbean, African, flamenco, and blues styles. Adelantando will still be a very enjoyable album to listen to for fans of pop music with a Latin flavour. Songs like 'Olé' and 'Adelantando' will certainly make you get up and dance, while tracks like 'Me gusta como eres' and 'Dejame vivir' will bring you back to a few of the very successful albums Jarabe de Palo have produced before. Unfortunately the quality of the album is not as consistent as the style Jarabe de Palo has received a lot of praise for. Unless you are already a big fan of Jarabe de Palo and want to have a complete collection of their work, pick up one of his older albums, like 'Flaca' and 'Depende', where the quality of Jarabe de Palo really comes to light. Unfortunately I haven't found anything in Adelantando that really moves Jarabe de Palo forward from their previous albums. |
