Travel

You become a part of the community when on an expedition through a local forest or climate.

There are detailed explanations from the local guides on different types of medicinal plants and natural medicines used by the local community. They tell of how the people from the area have been using the plants for generations against all kinds of illnesses.

Anything from stomach aches to mosquito bites can be healed with the use of a leaf or sap of a tree. Furthermore, as you wander through the forest the guide tells you of where the monkeys spend their nights and what kind of habits they have. You begin to realize how comfortable people move through the forest that has provided for centuries. Not a detail seems to get passed him and to every question you ask, an answer is given.

After the hike through the forest you return to the community, where you are invited to help with the preparation of a traditional meal. A delicious meal starts to take shape, by using only the very primitive cooking methods of the villagers. While you work on the yucca you explain to the women of the community what you usually eat at home and what people from your hometown like to eat.

Ecuador is a country where community based tourism is booming. Together with several Ecuadorian non profit organizations, local communities are working on getting a sustainable income through tourism. The preservation of nature and cultural diversity are the focus. The preservation of the diversity is of great importance to the people of Ecuador.

Ecuador is the home to many unique ecosystems that contribute to the development of medicines and new technologies. There are also several endangered animal species to be found in all parts of the country which need to be protected from the pressure of a globalizing way of life Ecuadorians are getting more accustomed to every day.

What happens when the local communities continue their agricultural and logging activities, under growing pressure of the every changing world? The communities are under constant financial pressure. Due to the enormous inflation they will have to produce more and more timber or agricultural products to sustain their way of life. Agricultural activities require clear lands and forests will be cut down. The rainforests are getting smaller each day. At this moment an area the size of 50 football pitches is being deforested illegally, every day! This is only a very modest estimate.

Many indigenous groups in Ecuador are very conscious of the natural wealth surrounding them. Giving them the opportunity to create alternative sources of income through tourism will indirectly support the protection of nature in Ecuador.

So community based tourism can be a solution. It gives local communities the chance to preserve their way of life, in harmony with their natural environment. Something you too can be a part of.
