Puyo

Destination details
City

The small jungle town of Puyo is situated two hours east of Banos, three hours south of Tena, and five hours north of Macas, representing the nexus between the Northern and Southern Oriente. Remote jungle areas are accessible to the north, east and south, while to the west, Andean towns are easily reachable, making Puyo a very convenient junction for travelers.

However, there are things to do in Puyo as well. The Paseo Turistico is a short trail along the Rio Puyo, and walking this combined with a dip in the lazily flowing river makes for a pleasant afternoon. Downtown, a number of agencies offer one to ten day jungle trips or cultural tours to Quichua villages and other indigenous communities. There are a plethora of options for these types of trips, and some agencies are more honest and better prepared than others, so research and choose carefully.

Places to stay and eat

Accommodation:

Puyo has a number of budget and midrange lodging options. Hostal Las Palmas has clean rooms with hot water three blocks from downtown and a ten-minute walk from the river for $10 per person per night. El Jardin, located right next to river, is also a good – albeit slightly more expensive – option, and has a very good restaurant attached as well.

Restaurants:

There are several cheap comedores on Orellana and Atahualpa streets downtown that serve almuerzos, meriendas, and other typical Ecuadorian fare. There are also small restaurants on the plaza next to the river, while the restaurant at El Jardin serves very good dishes for $6-9.

How to get there

The bus terminal is about a twenty-minute walk or $1 cab ride from downtown. Several busses a day run to Quito ($5, five hours), Ambato ($3, about three hours), Banos ($2, two hours), Macas ($5, five hours) and Tena ($3, three hours), as well as to other smaller towns.

A nice stop-over to the jungle. I can't say there's a lot to do around here, but you could be in worse places.
