The colourful market is being held every Wednesday and attracts people from the entire region. It is one of the best kept secrets of the Ecuadorean Andes. The trip to Simiatug alone is spectacular enough to visit the town. The road from Ambato and the one from Guaranda take you through stunning vistas of the mountainranges of Bolivar province and on a clear day, you may even get a glimpse of the ocean in the background. The reason for people to visit this indigenous town is the market, held every Wednesday. The town comes alive, gathering people from the region to trade their goods. Animals, handicrafts, clothing and food are all being sold during this authentic andean market. On any other day of the week Simiatug is just another enjoyable Andean town. The great surrounding makes Simiatug an excellent place to start hikes in the countryside, together with an indigenous guide. Don't forget to go shopping in the local fairtrade shop. The bags and other goods are handmade and of excellent quality. If you ask the ladies nicely, they will show you how to make your own products, the Andean way. Simiatug is know throughout the region for their knowledge of medicinal plants, which are being sold internationally. The small workplace is a great place to learn more about this special craft.
Places to stay and to eatThere is only one hostel in town, run by the locals. It is basic and comfortable. Just ask around in the village to find out where it is. In Simiatug there are several small restaurants offering local dishes. The one on the plaza is the most popular one. How to get thereFrom Quito take a bus to Ambato or Guaranda (get there through Ambato), they leave the Quito main bus terminal regularly. From both of these places take a bus to Simiatug.Buses from Guaranda leave twice a day (5AM and 1PM) for Simiatug, passing Salinas on the way there. During Wednesdays busses usually get packed, so make sure to get there early. Busses from Ambato leave a bit more regularly, about 5 time a day. Departure times vary. Simiatug is one of the largest towns of the Bolivar province. Tucked away in the gorgeous mountain ranges it seems to have been forgotten by tourists. Simiatug is one of the few towns in Ecuador of its size that is almost entirely made up out of indigenous people. Their traditional culture, homes and clothing make Simiatug a great place to get an understanding of the Andean way of life.
